Description of Internship Opportunity

Macquarie University’s Australian Carsulae Archaeological Project, (ACAP), is currently excavating at the ancient Roman site of Carsulae, which is situated in modern-day Umbria, Italy.

During the mid-year break 2017 ACAP will offer PACE internships for Macquarie University students, who will assist in the investigation and excavation of the site.

The internship will involve all aspects of archaeological excavation including: identification, excavation and documentation of stratigraphic units, identification and processing of artefacts and ecological material; interpretation of site phasing; as well as the conservation of artefacts and standing structures.

The program will run from Monday 3 July to Friday 28 July 2017, a total of four weeks. Students are expected to stay for the full term of the excavation. The team will stay in the nearby medieval town of San Gemini and travel to site five days a week, working from 8 am until 5 pm each day.

Any particular fields of study or skills?

The excavation program would suit students who are physically fit, have a good eye for detail, and who work well as part of a team. The work can be physically demanding and mentally challenging. Ideally participants will have successfully completed AHIS 230.

How to apply

Students interested in undertaking AHIS 346 Archaeological Fieldwork at Carsulae are asked to submit an application to Dr Jaye McKenzie-Clark via email (jayemckenzieclark@yahoo.com.au) with the following documentation:

  • Expression of interest outlining why you would like to take this unit and how it will add to your academic studies.
  • Academic transcript
  • Curriculum Vitae

Selected applicants will be contacted for an interview. Understandably competition for fieldwork places is strong and each student applying will be assessed on their academic record, performance at the interview and the quality of their application.
