Ceramic Analysis at Carsulae - Archaeological Fieldwork

Macquarie University's Australian Carsulae Archaeological Project, (ACAP), is currently excavating at the ancient Roman site of Carsulae, which is situated in modern-day Umbria, Italy.

In session two 2017 ACAP will offer PACE internships for Macquarie University students, who will assist in the investigation of pottery from the site.

The internship will involve the documentation, illustration, photography, and analysis of a large assemblage of pottery, which forms part of the site's tangible cultural heritage.

The program will run from Monday 18 September to Friday 13 October 2017, a total of four weeks from the mid-semester break in session two. Students will stay in the nearby medieval town of San Gemini and travel to site five days a week, working from 9 am until 5 pm each day. The internship will include a field trip to Deruta, a nearby town famous for its ceramic production since medieval times

The program would suit students who have a good eye for detail, are patient and methodical and who have 3D and spatial awareness.  Ideally participants will have successfully completed AHIS 230 and show a keen interest in ceramics. The work is not physically demanding but can be mentally challenging.

Applications should be submitted to Dr Jaye McKenzie-Clark by 30th June 2017. Selected applicants will be contacted for an interview. Students who have completed AHIS 230, Archaeology and Society are particularly encouraged to apply.

Understandably competition for fieldwork places is strong and each student applying will be assessed on their academic record, performance at the interview and the quality of their application.
