Description of Internship Opportunity

Conservation, Preservation, Restoration (CPR) is a materials conservation studio dedicated to the treatment of paper-based, photographic and textile materials.

CPR will provide a unique opportunity for student interns to gain insights into materials conservation practice and dispel common misrepresentations and misunderstanding about conservation. Interns will have access to some of the specialist reference materials used by CPR, and will receive training by working closely with the senior conservator on one of the projects discussed below.

The internships will take place at Macquarie University University campus on Fridays during Session 1 2017, however they can also be undertaken by arrangement at the CPR studio, at 10 Lemon Street, Balmoral NSW 2571 (Southern Highlands).

Project M3/2016: Recording and indexing of artworks, documents, photographs and reference materials
This is a component of an ongoing project on a large private collection comprising a wide range of artworks, objects, documents, photographs, books and audio-visual materials. Students will be introduced to conservation laboratory safety, conduct, processes, reporting, handling of various types of artefacts, use of specialised tools and condition assessment. The interns will be responsible for setting-up an indexing system, measuring sizes and thicknesses of paper supports, assessing types of media, and assessing the condition and conservation needs of the collection materials.  Data recording will involve the use of Excel.
Required: English, police clearance certificate, colour perception, basic use of Excel

Project M4/2016: Conservation treatment of a book
This is a unique hands-on experience in the conservation of a 20th century reference book. The interns will be introduced to conservation laboratory safety, conduct, processes, selective techniques and reporting. Working closely with a senior conservator the interns will undertake a variety of conservation tasks such as preparation of repair tissues and paste, application of paper repairs, humidification, flattening and collating of pages to assist with the completion of this conservation project.

Project M5/2016: Exhibition on Disaster Recovery and Preparedness
Interns will develop the content, format, and the exhibition display plan.  This project will involve the review of:  materials vulnerabilities, composition, designs and suitability of enclosures, types of disasters, disaster preparedness, disaster recovery procedures, and
some of the major disaster recoveries of cultural materials in Europe, USA and Australia. Interns will be involved in selecting photo-documentation and display materials.
Required: English, basic use of Power Point Presentation
