Description of Internship Opportunity

This activity gives you the opportunity to expand your understanding of environmental management as a means of reducing consumption; and avoiding, minimising or reducing carbon pollution of the environment. With a focus on offices, the activity training examines relevant federal legislation, frameworks and policy measures for preventing and managing energy use and carbon pollution, and for improving energy efficiency. Interesting and innovative examples of energy efficiency from industry will be presented and examined. The activity involves one lecture involving a hypothetical energy audit example, conducting an audit of a Macquarie University department, analysis of findings, and offering recommendations through a short report and presentation.  Departments will have the opportunity to apply for up to $500 to implement your recommendations.

Tasks involved will include: 

1.       Undertake energy training workshop with Macquarie University Sustainability – including completing a hypothetical office audit and providing energy efficiency recommendations.

2.      Complete a ‘CitySwitch’ energy audit on a Macquarie University (MQU) department
a.      Liaise with MQU department contact to determine scope of the audit and understand their general energy needs and specific nuances
b.      Undertake a ‘CitySwitch’ energy audit on MQU department (including Watts (W) measurement using a power meter and light intensity using a lux meter – provided by sustainability)
c.       Distribution and analysis of behavioural questionnaire (as needed) for MQU department.
3.       Compile recommendations based on the ‘CitySwitch’ audit
a.      Work with MQU department contact to determine which recommendations are likely to be a good strategic fit
b.      Critical analysis and evaluation of completed energy audit
4.      Present audit findings and offer recommendations through a presentation and report (templates provided).
