Description of Internship Opportunity

Macquarie University’s Tundzha Regional Archaeological Project (TRAP), under the aegis of the Yambol History Museum is conducting two landscape archaeology campaigns in 2017. These campaigns will be aimed at regional monitoring and excavation of select Thracian burial mounds in the province of Yambol, Bulgaria.

During the mid-year breaks of 2017 TRAP will offer PACE internships for Macquarie University students, who will assist in the investigation and excavation of the burial mounds.

The internship will involve all aspects of archaeological fieldwork including: regional survey and documentation of burial mounds and other standing archaeological heritage, identification, excavation and documentation of stratigraphic units, identification and processing of artefacts, biological and ecological material.

The first term of the program will run from 9 to 30 April 2017; second term from the 10 - 30 September 2017; a total of three weeks each. Students are expected to stay for the full term of the fieldwork. The team will stay in the village of Kabile, north of the city of Yambol in shared rooms. The participants will be swap between the excavation and survey teams, and travel to study area or the excavation site six days a week, working from 8 am until 5 pm each day.

Please note that this is a designated PACE opportunity and selected students will be expected to enrol in AHIS346: Archaeological Fieldwork. Selected students may be eligible to apply for a PACE Travel Grant for $1700 once enrolled in AHIS346.

Any particular fields of study or skills?

The Tundzha landscape archaeology programme will suit independent individuals who are physically fit, work well in team and have a good sense of humour. The work can be demanding both physically and mentally, and applicants need to be able to work under pressure, in a culturally and linguistically challenging environment. We provide extensive training on-site, but ideally the applicant will have successfully completed AHIS190, AHIS290, or similar.
