The objectives of the Honours program are to enhance your understanding of history, to provide you with the opportunity to undertake supervised research in a chosen area and to improve your academic qualifications.

The study program for the Honours degree of Bachelor of Ancient History consists of four years full-time / equivalent part-time. Students will need to achieve a higher ATAR to qualify for this program.

Key Features:

The teaching of archaeology (including papyrology, epigraphy and numismatics based on the resources of the Museum of Ancient Cultures and on fieldwork in Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Greece and/or Italy) is fully integrated into the study of ancient history.

Opportunities for overseas fieldwork are included in the program. Travelling scholarships to cover airfares will be awarded to the best students and grants-in-aid are available upon application.

The study of Judaism/Early Christianity, Late Roman and Early Byzantine history across the Silk Road to ancient China is available within the degree.

Suitable for:

Students with an interest in ancient history who are keen to learn more about certain aspects of ancient cultures and are also interested in completing an Honours thesis.

The Bachelor of Ancient History (Honours) program is also a good starting point for those interested in postgraduate study in the area of ancient history.

Requirements

Recommended Prior Knowledge:

First-year ancient history units do not require any assumed knowledge, prerequisites or recommended studies. Other units taken as part of a degree may require assumed knowledge, prerequisites or recommended studies and you should refer to the Macquarie University Handbook of Undergraduate Studiesfor full degree requirements ( www.handbook.mq.edu.au ).

What You Will Study

Students are required to take units in two ancient languages. Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Coptic, Ancient Greek, Latin Classical Hebrew and Akkadian are all offered from beginners levels.
